The labial frenum is a mucous membrane fold connecting the lip to the alveolar and/or gingival mucous membrane, and the underlying periosteum.
Due to their insertions and their sizes, frena may alter periodontal tissues or interfere with certain orthodontic or prosthetic treatment plans, hence the necessity to perform a frenectomy on preventive or curative purposes. This article aims at determining the proper moment to perform a frenectomy as well as reviewing the various indications of such a procedure based on scientific evidence.
